aBlood drive marks 9/11 Day of Service

In the days following the September 11 attacks, a half a million people donated blood. People were compelled to perform this small yet selfless act in hopes that they would help save a life in the midst of a national tragedy.
Today, blood donations are needed more than ever as the blood supply has dropped to its lowest level in 15 years. This September 11th, United Way of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey in support of the National Day of Service and Remembrance is hosting a blood drive to help boost our local blood supply and continue this tradition of giving and volunteerism.
The drive will take place at 1709 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia on Tuesday, September 11th from 11:30am to 4:30pm.
Register now by scheduling an appointment here or by calling 1-800-733-2767 with sponsor code 0228487.

Philabundance sets second annual hunger symposium
Hunger is already plaguing almost 900,000 men, women, and children in our communities, and this summer they are being struck harder than ever.
The historic drought in America’s heartland is causing a sharp increase in food prices, and will continue to drive them up throughout next year, with unforeseen consequences. This is compounded by uncertainty about the subsidies and benefits such as SNAP in the Farm Bill, which may put those struggling to make ends meet in jeopardy. All this occurs at a time when food banks, one of the key resources for those who face hunger, are experiencing record-setting difficulty in sourcing enough food.
Join the conversation on this crisis on September 13th from 7:30am to 1:30pm at Philabundance’s Second Annual Hunger Symposium to learn about the difficulties that the group faces in food sourcing, and innovative strategies that are being employed – from the farm to the plate – to make sure that those in our community who need help do not go hungry. The expert panelists and speakers will make sure that you come away with a better understanding of the issues, and ideas of how to help.

CPI opens registration for fall workshops
With a growing number of Philadelphia residents taking a more active role in improving or shaping the future of their neighborhoods, the Citizens Planning Institute is becoming a popular way for individuals active in civic organizations to learn more about how to get involved and take greater responsibility in community improvement throughout the city.
The CPI, a program created and managed by the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, empowers citizens by providing information about city planning, zoning and the development process and learning from other civic organization leaders across the city.  The CPI educational program for residents is one part of the Planning Commission’s Philadelphia2035 – a new comprehensive plan designed to create an even more vibrant city by 2035.
For the last two years, the grant-funded program has given 120 individuals the opportunity to attend classes and workshops taught by experts in the fields of sustainability, neighborhood and community development, zoning and other topics that students find of great value.  After attending three classes, as well as electives and optional workshops, participants receive a “Certificate of Completion” as “citizen planners.”  Many graduates are currently using their new skills and education to make improvements or plan for change in their community.
An application process for the fall course series runs from now through September 20, and the CPI will select 30 students.  The application, course descriptions and information about guest instructors are now posted on the CPI website.   Since the City’s new zoning code is now being implemented, there are a number of speakers who will be educating the fall class about how the new code can enhance development in their neighborhood or commercial corridor.
Classes, including a core curriculum and electives, will be held on Wednesday evenings (6-9pm), October 10th to November 14th in Center City.  The core course of three sessions carries a fee of $30 total; the fee for each elective session is an additional $20.  Buffet dinner is served at each session.
